Background: Kala-azar [visceral leishmaniasis (VL)] is caused by the protozoon Leishmania donovani complex. Without adequate treatment, most patients with clinical VL die due to secondary infections. Pentavalent antimonial compounds are commercially available as sodium stibogluconate and meglumine antimoniate. Sodium stibogluconate remains the mainstay of treatment in most parts of the world. The aim of the study was to evaluate the serious adverse effects of sodium stibogluconate in the treatment of kala-azar (VL). Β  Methods: The study was carried out in the medicine department of North Bengal Medical College Hospital, Sirajganj during the period of June 2021 to December 2021. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study with a sample size of 30. Complete history taking and physical examination were done and recorded in a case record form. At least 7 electrocardiograms (ECGs) were done (1 before treatment, 5 during treatment weekly intervals, and 1 after completion of treatment). Results: In ECG, the following changes were noted (the rhythm, T wave amplitude, ST segment, and QTc interval). Out of 30 patients, 19 patients (63.33%) developed abnormalities in ECG. Among them, 14 patients (46.67%) developed prolongation of QTc interval, 6 patients developed T wave inversion, and 1 patient developed transient 1st-degree heart block. No patients developed symptomatic arrhythmia. Conclusions: Kala-azar is prevalent among the poor in Bangladesh and can be fatal without treatment. Sodium stibogluconate has been associated with cardiological adverse effects, but it can be used safely with proper monitoring

Background: Multi-drug resistant organisms, particularly in urinary tract infections, have become a significant concern in developing countries like Bangladesh. Physicians are facing challenges in treating hospitalized cases due to the ineffectiveness of conventional antibiotics and empirical treatment, as well as the emergence of multi-drug-resistant Escherichia coli. The main goal of the study was to observe the prevalence and resistant pattern of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli urinary tract infections among patients admitted to a teaching hospital. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2011 to February 2012 at Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital (UAMCH), Dhaka, Bangladesh. It included 100 cases, and detailed information was obtained through a standardized protocol. Results: In a study of 100 UTI patients, 45 had MDR E. coli while 55 had non-MDR E. coli. Females accounted for 79% of the patients, with a mean age of 44.85Β±17.81 years. The majority of participants fell into the 31-40 years age group (28%) and 60 years age group (23%). Among the participants, 57% had a history of UTI while 43% had no previous UTI history. High resistance was observed against amoxicillin, amoxiclav, cephradine, cefuroxime, cefixime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and nalidixic acid. However, ciprofloxacin (2.22%), levofloxacin (6.67%), and cotrimoxazole (31.11%) exhibited lower resistance rates among MDR samples. Imipenem and meropenem showed 100% effectiveness against all MDR samples. Conclusion: MDR E. coli rates were alarmingly high in a teaching hospital in Bangladesh. Excessive antimicrobial drug consumption globally has led to antibiotic-resistant E. coli isolates, posing challenges for effective UTI treatment worldwide. Antibiotic therapy remains crucial in controlling these invasive agents

Wireless Electroencephalograms (EEG) are currently being used to wirelessly transmit the data from brain sensors to a computer and they carry huge potential for many future medical applications. This paper presents the design of a hy-brid medical sensor network with Tmote Sky motes as wire-less EEG sensor nodes at the lowest level collecting EEG signals and sending them to Stargate PDAs at the next level. Stargates perform artifact removal, Fourier transfor-mation and feature extraction and the final machine intelli-gence algorithms are run at a PC server. Several features of the CodeBlue medical sensor network like query processing, routing layer are used in our design. The advantages of the hybrid medical sensor network integrating wireless EEGs include the capability to have the brain monitoring func-tionality incorporated into the medical sensor networks. Longistatin, a Plasminogen Activator, Is Key to the Availability of Blood-Meals for Ixodid Ticks

Ixodid ticks are notorious blood-sucking ectoparasites and are completely dependent on blood-meals from hosts. In addition to the direct severe effects on health and productivity, ixodid ticks transmit various deadly diseases to humans and animals. Unlike rapidly feeding vessel-feeder hematophagous insects, the hard ticks feed on hosts for a long time (5βˆ’10 days or more), making a large blood pool beneath the skin. Tick's salivary glands produce a vast array of bio-molecules that modulate their complex and persistent feeding processes. However, the specific molecule that functions in the development and maintenance of a blood pool is yet to be identified. Recently, we have reported on longistatin, a 17.8-kDa protein with two functional EF-hand Ca++-binding domains, from the salivary glands of the disease vector, Haemaphysalis longicornis, that has been shown to be linked to blood-feeding processes. Here, we show that longistatin plays vital roles in the formation of a blood pool and in the acquisition of blood-meals. Data clearly revealed that post-transcriptional silencing of the longistatin-specific gene disrupted ticks' unique ability to create a blood pool, and they consequently failed to feed and replete on blood-meals from hosts. Longistatin completely hydrolyzed Ξ±, Ξ² and Ξ³ chains of fibrinogen and delayed fibrin clot formation. Longistatin was able to bind with fibrin meshwork, and activated fibrin clot-bound plasminogen into its active form plasmin, as comparable to that of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), and induced lysis of fibrin clot and platelet-rich thrombi. Plasminogen activation potentiality of longistatin was increased up to 4 times by soluble fibrin. Taken together, our results suggest that longistatin may exert potent functions both as a plasminogen activator and as an anticoagulant in the complex scenario of blood pool formation; the latter is critical to the feeding success and survival of ixodid ticks

This study used a completely randomized design with four treatments and four replications. The arrangement of the fish meal storage time treatments were T0: 0 weeks, T1: 2 weeks, T2: 4 weeks and T3: 6 weeks. Temperature and humidity were measured during storage in warehouse. Parameters measured were moisture and free fatty acid. The results showed that fish meal which has been stored at different times was significantly affecting (P<0.05) on moisture and free fatty acids. The average of temperature and humidity during storage (0 - 6 weeks) were 29-30oC and 60-76%. The highest moisture was 17.38% obtained in the T3 and the highest free fatty acid content was obtained at 4.30%

Insecticidal potentials of plant oils against Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) in stored chickpea

    Get PDF
Pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L., is an important pest of stored chickpea and widely distributed in the world. Chemical insecticides and fumigants are common control tactics against pulse beetle, even though they have caused serious drawbacks. As an alternative control method, botanical compounds and their constituents have been successfully used against this pest. We tested the protective efficacy of 18 edible and non-edible oils in storage in ambient room condition. The efficacy was evaluated considering oviposition, adult emergence, seed infestation and seed weight loss caused by pulse beetle. All the tested oils effectively checked the oviposition, adult emergence, seed infestation and weight loss compared to control. However, the oils of neem, castor, karanja, and sesame at 4.0 to 8.0 ml/kg seed showed significant reduction of oviposition, and completely inhibited adult emergence, seed infestation and weight loss of chickpea seeds. The mustard oil could reduce the oviposition, adult emergence, seed infestation and seed weight loss at 8.0 ml/kg. Tested oils did not show any adverse effects on seed germination up to three months of storage. Therefore, neem, castor, karanja, and sesame oils can be used as environmentally safe management tactic for C. chinensis in protecting pulse seeds in store

The empowerment of women is one of the central issues in the process of development of countries all over the world. The Government of India has made Empowerment of Women as one of the principal objectives of the Ninth Five Year Plan (1997-2002) and also declared 2001 as the year of β€˜Women’s Empowerment’. Women's empowerment is a process in which women gain greater share of control over resources - material, human and intellectual like knowledge, information, ideas and financial resources like money - and access to money and control over decision-making in the home, community, society and nation, and to gain `power'. Microfinance is the provision of small amounts of financial services to low income poor and very poor self employed people. The participation of women in Self Help Groups (SHGs) made a significant impact on their empowerment both in social and economical aspects. This study addresses empowerment of Muslim women through microfinance and self help groups in Chennai city of Tamilnadu. The information required for the study has been collected from both the primary and secondary sources. Further statistical analysis has been undertaken using various statistical tools like logistic regression, student t test, F test, Chi square test, ANOVA, Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT), the Wald Test, etc
